My friends over at Three Squares sent me their new lunchbox to try out and review – I have been putting it to the test this past week, and I’m so excited to share my thoughts with all of you!
The Three Squares lunchbox is available in three colors: blue, pink, and yellow. I love the bold & bright exterior shell of the box – the colors are fantastic. Both the shell and the tray are BPA and phthalate-free, and are made of a heavy duty plastic, and the hinge and clasp both feel durable as well. The manufacturing information and product information is not permanently a part of the box.
The box has two of my favorite features in a frequently used box: it’s leakproof and the tray is dishwasher safe. Like all boxes with a silicone lined lid, the outer shell should be hand washed to preserve the leakproof seal. I tested the leakproof features with a variety of foods – juicy citrus fruits, hummus, yogurt, jam – nothing leaked, and everything stayed in it’s own compartment.
The Three Squares box holds a massive amount of food – this box is larger than most of the other all-in-one bento boxes available. The outer dimensions are 8.9″ x 6.7″ x 2.2″, and I did have a little trouble finding a lunch bag in my collection that would fit the box. I ended up using one of my PlanetBox bags, and had enough room to pack a Horizon Organics milk box, napkin, ice pack and spoon alongside it. I hope that as the company grows, Three Squares will offer a matching bag. Given the size and its labeling, this box is most appropriate for teenagers and adults.
After packing this box for my husband, my kid, and even for myself, the cons I found are mostly cosmetic. The Three Squares logo is adorable, but at least for my husband, too cute. He’ll still take this box to work, but he would prefer it if the logo were smaller and less central. I could see a teenager feeling the same way about the design. In the same vein, I also hope that Three Squares eventually offers a clear insert tray.
To sum it all up – the Three Squares lunchbox is a good product for teens and adults.
The Pros: great colors, large capacity, high quality materials, dishwasher safe tray,
it’s leakproof (really!), available on both the Three Squares website and Amazon Prime
The Cons: the box does not contain permanent markings required by the FDA and CPSC for products for children 12 and under, and the logo and interior tray artwork may be a touch too cute for some adults and teens
