This week, I’ve teamed up with my friends at PlanetBox to review the versatile, stainless steel PlanetBox Rover lunch box! The PlanetBox team is also giving one lucky Bento Ninja reader a PlanetBox Rover, Magnet Set and Carry Bag just in time for back to school season – read through to the end of the post for all the details and how to enter.
Say hello to the PlanetBox Rover & Carry Bag!
All of PlanetBox’s three lunch box models are dishwasher safe, all-in-one stainless steel divided containers. The insulated carry bag pictured fits both the Rover and Launch models and comes in a variety of colors and designs. I frequently use the carry bag for a variety of my other lunch boxes as well.
If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that I am a fan of the entire line – but I think the Rover is the most versatile for cold lunches for the entire family. The Rover can hold a perfect amount of food for adults, older teens and tweens, as well as younger children, depending on how tightly you pack it.
The Rover is on the higher end of lunch boxes, but it’s longevity makes it a fantastic investment – instead of buying a new lunch box each year, you can buy one PlanetBox Kit and use it for your child’s entire school career. An individual Rover is currently $55.95, a “kit” which includes the box and carry bag is currently $71.95, and a kit + BottleRocket water bottle is currently $87.95.
Inside the PlanetBox Rover
The PlanetBox Rover has 5 compartments, pictured empty on the left. The Rover is not leakproof, but it comes with two leakproof containers – the large round “Big Dipper” and the smaller “Little Dipper”, pictured on the right. The silicone seals on both containers engage when the lid is closed and latched. The Big Dipper is perfect for yogurt and fruits with a high water content like watermelon. The Little Dipper is perfect for sauces and dips.
Outside the PlanetBox Rover
The PlanetBox Rover has a sleek, shiny stainless steel finish, but to make it even more fun, each lunch box comes with your choice of one magnet set to customize its look. The Rainforest set is shown above. Additional magnet sets can be purchased for $3.95 – including a blank set that can be colored on with crayons or colored pencils, and then hand washed and used again. PlanetBox also offers a Design Your Own Magnet option, starting at $8.95/set. The magnets are hand wash only.

Breakfast for Lunch
Breakfast for lunch is always a favorite around here! This PlanetBox Rover features both of the included dipper containers, and utilizes some silicone cups to divide some of the spaces and add a punch of color. These cups are ones I’ve purchased from various stores, but PlanetBox also offers their own silicone pods that are specifically made to fit the compartments.
In this Breakfast For Lunch:
Stonyfield Organic Strawberry Yogurt
Egg and Bear Shaped Hard Boiled Eggs
Honey Beef Jerky
Chocolate Covered Sunflower Seeds
Grown Up PlanetBox Rover
This PlanetBox Rover was packed for Mr. Bento Ninja and is an example of how the box can be packed for an adult or older teen. It’s also a fantastic example of how food looks amazing in a PlanetBox without any effort – I don’t always make theme lunches, and it’s so simple to just pop healthy food right into the PlanetBox compartments and it always looks beautiful and appetizing.
In this Grown Up Lunch:
Spicy Salmon Rolls with Midnight Rice on top of Wasabi Seaweed
Spicy Tuna Crunch Rolls on top of Wasabi Seaweed
Low Sodium Soy Sauce in the Little Dipper
POW! Superhero PlanetBox Rover
It wouldn’t be a Bento Ninja post without a theme lunch! This lunch features one of our favorite themes – superheroes! It was packed with an elementary school child’s appetite in mind an is an example of how you can scale down the quantity of food you pack in the PlanetBox Rover to fit the user.
In this Superhero Rover lunch:
POW! Sandwich: sunbutter and superfruit on whole wheat bread, cut with this comic book cookie cutter and colored with food markers
Star Shaped Hard Boiled Egg
Yellow and Orange Carrot Sticks, accented with a star food pick
Hummus packed in the Little Dipper
Strawberries, accented with star food picks
MySuperCookies Chocolate Hero cookie
